It was the first week of Year 7 and we were set a project to create a time capsule filled with stuff that would be interesting to dig up and discover in six years’ time, when we would be in Year 13. We worked in pairs to create our capsules, and, of course, I worked with you, Finn. A lot of groups put in things such as newspapers, books, memory sticks loaded with documents and photos, and even fashions of the day – like a T-shirt. You were more pragmatic. Reminding me that prices increase over time, you convinced me we should fill our capsule with confectionary, aiming to sell it in six years’ time, and making a tidy profit in the process.

“I reckon we’ll at least double our money, Eric, if not quadruple it, the way things currently are!” you’d said, grinning.

“Shouldn’t we just do what everyone else is doing, though?” I replied.

“Nothing good ever happened by following the crowd, Eric! Trust me, you’ll thank me for this in the future. How do you think billionaires get started?”

I supposed through inherited wealth, nepotism, luck, or a lot of socio-economic privilege, but maybe you had a point. You gotta start somewhere.

It only occurred to me months later, when the capsules were buried in a corner of the school field, that all our confectionary would be well past their best before dates when we dug them up.

“Doesn’t matter!” you declared. “People pay a fortune for retro stuff on eBay – we’ll still be quids in!”

Finn Jones. Every cloud always has a silver lining.
